What questions should I ask the smile makeover dentist?

Everyone’s situation is different and what is important to you might not be to someone else. There are questions which apply in all situations and some which are personal to you.

In order to help you here are a few ‘general’ questions:

  • Are you a member of the BACD?
  • How long does a smile makeover take?
  • If I am not suitable can you suggest an alternative?
  • What type of anaesthesia will you use (if any)?
  • Will it hurt?
  • How much does it cost (see Question 5)?
  • How long have you been performing this process?
  • How many smile makeovers have you done?
  • What are your success rates?
  • What are the risks/complications with a smile makeover?
  • What happens if something goes wrong?
  • If something goes wrong and needs correcting will I have to pay more?
  • How long does a smile makeover take/will it need to be repeated?
  • Do you have any ‘before’ and ‘after’ photographs that I can look at?
  • Do you have a finance/loans scheme?
  • What aftercare is provided – if any?

Some patients find it helpful to write down a few questions beforehand so that they won’t forget anything important during the consultation.

If you have had a bad dental experience in the past or are nervous about dental treatment in general then don’t feel that this will exclude you. Many dentists and clinics are only too happy to put you at your ease and will talk through your fears with you. They have a variety of ways of dealing with this which include sedation, listening to music through headphones and hypnotherapy.

If you have any fears then please mention these to the dentist. He or she will be sympathetic to your concerns and will reassure you about the process, from start to finish.
