Q9. What are the signs of arthritis?

A9. The characteristic signs of arthritis in a joint (or joints) include:

  • Pain
  • Stiffness
  • Swelling
  • Inflammation
  • Skin around the joint is red in appearance and hot when touched.
  • Restricted movement
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite

Fever and loss of appetite are not common to all types of arthritis. But pain, stiffness and inflammation are.

Many people notice that their joints are stiff first thing in the morning which then improves throughout the day. The muscles around the joint lose elasticity and strength which prevents them from supporting the weight of the joint.
