Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is a natural means of providing your newborn baby with all the nourishment they need to grow and develop. Experts recommend breastfeeding for the first six months of the baby’s life; breastfeeding has numerous benefits and ensures your baby gets the best possible start in life.

What are the benefits of breastfeeding?

Breastfeeding has numerous health benefits for your growing baby and can help them to build up their immune system. Breast milk is rich in the nutrients the baby needs during their first few weeks or months. Breast mile can offer the following health benefits for the baby:

  • Protection against ear infections
  • Protection against chest infections
  • Reduced risk of eczema
  • Reduced risk of obesity
  • Protection against urine infections
  • Reduced risk of asthma

Research has also suggested that women who breastfeed are less likely to develop ovarian cancer, breast cancer or brittle bones in later life.

Breastfeeding also provides a unique bonding opportunity; this is perhaps the best way for a mother to bond with their baby, especially during the early days. As well as the physical closeness, the mother can take the opportunity to communicate with her baby and the baby will learn to recognise their mother’s face and will start to communicate back to them in due time.
