Use: Anticonvulsant

Phenytoin is commonly used to treat seizures.

Cautions:

- liver disease or impairment
- pregnancy and breast feeding
- elderly patients

Side effects:

Occasional:

- insomnia
- headache
- dizziness
- hand tremor
- stomach upset

Rare:

- increased thirst and urine frequency
- skin rash
- gum enlargement
- confusion
- unsteadiness

Interactions:

Phenytoin interacts with many common medications such as steroids, oral contraceptives, and some antibiotics.
