TRIMETHOPRIM

Use:

Trimethoprim is most commonly used to treat urinary tract infections (eg. cystitis). It may also be used to treat bronchitis.

Usual dose:

For urinary tract infections, the usual adult dose is 200 mg twice a day. For children 6-12 years old, 100mg twice per day. Children under 6 yrs take between 25 mg and 50 mg once a day.

For chronic infections and prophylaxis (prevention), 100mg at night is the usual adult dose.

Cautions:

- kidney impairment
- blood disorders
- pregnancy
- folate deficiency
- liver impairment
- porphyria

Side effects:

- GI upset (nausea, vomiting)
- itching
- skin rash

Most people do not experience any side effects with this medicine.
