Benzethonium chloride
Benzethonium chloride, also called hyamine, is a synthetic quaternary ammonium compound used as a germicide and an antimicrobial agent in cosmetics and personal care products like eg. bowl cleaners, anti-itch medications, antibacterial moist towelettes and wipes, etc., both rinse-off and leave-on, and as a surfactant, bactericide, preservative, and antiinfective agent in many topical antiseptic gels. Its CAS number is [121-54-0] and its SMILES structure is C[N+](CCO CCOc2ccc (C(C)(C)CC(C)(C)C) cc2)(C)Cc1 ccccc1.[Cl-]. It has the appearance of an odourless white crystalline hygroscopic powder with melting point of 162-164 °C and it is moderately soluble in water. It is available under trade names salanine, BZT, diapp, quatrachlor, polymine d, phemithyn, antiseptol, disilyn, phermerol, and others.
