Sertaconazole
Sertaconazole nitrate (Ertaczo®) is an antifungal medication of the imidazole class. It is available as a cream to treat skin infections such as athlete's foot.
Mechanism of action
The mechanism of action of sertaconazole is not fully understood. It is believed that, as all imidazole antifungals, sertaconazole inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol by the fungal cell. Ergosterol is a key component of the cell membrane of fungi, and lack of this component leads to leakage of the cell contents and ultimately to cell death.
Microbiology
Susceptible organisms
Trichophyton rubrum
Trichophyton mentagrophytes
Epidermophyton floccosum
Side effects
Side effects were rarely reported with sertaconazole therapy, but may include contact dermatitis, burning on application site and skin dryness.
