Do dental X-rays increase the risk of cancer?-9259

Parents have been left confused and concerned after a New York Times expose revealed the possible dangers associated with dental X-rays.

The piece revealed that dentists across America were using old X-ray machines, which emit higher levels of radiation than newer digital models, which are becoming increasingly popular with orthodontists and other dental specialists.

Recent studies have also revealed a link between dental X-rays and an increased risk of cancer; a study published in Acta Oncologica found that exposure to dental X-rays doubled the risk of thyroid cancer; risks continued to increase beyond this figure as exposure to radiation increased.

The story in the New York Times claims that many dentists use X-rays routinely and experts have recommended a more cautious approach to X-rays in the future.
