Has Mel B Gone Too Far? -8244

Former Spice Girl, Mel B recently gave birth to her third daughter – Madison. However, after the birth she announced she intended going on a diet to lose 15 kilograms within 3 months.

This is a huge amount of weight to lose over such a short period of time and has got a few people worried whether she is going too far, too fast.

Mel B also became the new face of Jenny Craig, the weight loss and dieting company, which has become popular with many people on both sides of the Atlantic. When tackled about the subject of her weight loss she told reporters: “No. Not in a hurry, I just want to do it properly. I want to do it in a healthy, managed, controlled way.”

However, what Mel B thinks is the healthy, controlled manner of losing weight may conflict with the stated aims of the Jenny Craig system itself. A loss of 15 kilograms over 3 months goes way beyond the company’s target loss of 1 per cent of body weight per week.

Nutritionists are also a little perturbed. Aloysa Hourigan, senior nutritionist at Nutrition Australia said: “It’s OK to eat healthy and look after yourself but it’s not a good time to restrict calories.”

This comment was echoed by Professor Clare Collins of Newcastle University. She said: “It’s the perfect time to focus on healthy eating.

“It’s not the time for extreme dieting. A woman’s body is designed to take six to 12 months to return to a healthy weight.”

Whether the former Spice Girl is prepared to take this advice onboard is yet to be seen. That said, as an ambassador for Jenny Craig her progress is likely to be monitored.

She may want to lose 15 kilograms in 3 months, but she may not be allowed to if it is deemed too far, too fast.
