Lichen Planus
Lichen planus is a skin condition characterised by very itchy, raised lesions affecting the flexor surfaces, palms & soles, & mucous membranes.
Papules are initially red but become purple in colour. Papules flatten over a few months to leave pigmentation.
The cause of lichen planus is unknown.
Lichen planus affects men more than women.
Treatment
The condition is self-limiting in most patients. In moderate to severe cases, steroid creams may provide symptomatic relief.
Specialist treatment involves oral steroids &/or PUVA (psoralen ultraviolet A).
Possible Complications
- Nail involvement (pitting & grooving)
- Scarring alopecia (scarring of the scalp)
- Malignanat change (very rare)
Prognosis
50% of cases are clear in less than 9 months. 15% have continuing symptoms beyond 18 months. 1 in 5 have a further attack.
