A Government department in the USA approved a new genetically modified alfalfa crop despite a warning from a respected scientist.<\/p>\n

The warning was given two weeks before the approval because a new pathogen was found that could cause infertility<\/a> in humans as well as animals. The pathogen which is so small it can only be seen using an electron microscope was found in associated crops of soybeans and corn in very high concentrations. Hence the decision by Professor Don Huber; he has advised delaying approval of the alfalfa. He wrote a letter to the secretary of the Government Quango, USDA which said: \u201cI believe the threat we are facing from this pathogen is unique and of a high risk status. In layman\u2019s terms, it should be treated as an emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n

Professor Huber is a well respected scientist who has worked both in professional and military agencies, so ignoring his pleas has not gone down too well in scientific circles. However the USDA told reporters: \u201cWe\u2019re reviewing it, and will respond directly to Dr. Huber, rather than responding through the media.\u201d<\/p>\n

The producer of the genetically modified crop, Monsanto is no stranger to controversy. There are many people and organisations who oppose any form of what they call Frankenstein foods. They believe that modifying crops genetically, could have devastating consequences in the future.<\/p>\n

As far as the Alfalfa crop is concerned professor Huber is also concerned that the particular strain approved is susceptible to manganese deficiency; other strains are not.<\/p>\n

Infertility, particularly in humans is a growing problem worldwide. There are a number of possible causes including diet<\/a> and pollution. It will therefore be of great concern to many people that a potentially harmful crop such as \u2018Roundup Ready\u2019 alfalfa should be to be approved before all possible problems such as the newly discovered pathogen are sorted out.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
