{"id":177,"date":"2010-11-02T14:16:45","date_gmt":"2010-11-02T14:16:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.medic8.com\/news\/?p=177"},"modified":"2011-01-17T14:20:51","modified_gmt":"2011-01-17T14:20:51","slug":"child-banned-from-pre-school-over-long-hair-7443","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.medic8.com\/news\/child-banned-from-pre-school-over-long-hair-7443\/","title":{"rendered":"Child banned from pre-school over long hair-7443"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The mother of a four-year-old boy was told he could not attend a Catholic pre-kindergarten class in New Jersey, because of his long hair.<\/p>\n<p>Renee Szablewski had decided to let her son Jack grow his hair long, so that when it was cut off it could be donated to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medic8.com\/cancer\/index.htm\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"53\" title=\"cancer\">cancer<\/a> sufferers needing wigs. Jack\u2019s grandfather had died of lung cancer when the boy was only 16 months old.<\/p>\n<p>Szablewski insists that St Dominic\u2019s school knew all about the hair growing project when he enrolled for pre-kindergarten and that she was told by staff that would be fine, as long as his long locks were cut by the time kindergarten proper started.<\/p>\n<p>However, the school changed its rules and asked Szablewski to make sure Jack\u2019s hair was short and neat by the time he started St Dominic\u2019s on October 1. Renee had planned a media event the day before to witness the cutting of both their hair, but the stylist couldn\u2019t make it because of a storm, so Jack turned up with his long hair still in place on the first day of school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe teacher wouldn\u2019t let him through the doors and left us standing out in the rain,\u201d Szablewski said. \u201cHe didn\u2019t do anything wrong, and he\u2019s the victim here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis child has done nothing wrong,\u201d the diocese said in a statement, agreeing with Renee\u2019s comments. \u201cThis matter is between the parent and the school, and the partnership between the two entities that is critical to a healthy and successful educational experience at St. Dominic School.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The mother of a four-year-old boy was told he could not attend a Catholic pre-kindergarten class in New Jersey, because of his long hair.
