BLOOD CLOTS AND THE PILL

The combined oral contraceptive pill (OCP) may influence coagulation, increasing the risk of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), stroke and heart attack.

Combined oral contraceptives are not recommended for women with pre-existing cardiovascular disease, in women who have a familial tendency to form blood clots, women with severe obesity and/or hypercholesterolaemia (high cholesterol level), and in smokers over age 35.
