Are there any risk factors?

In many cases it is difficult to pinpoint the cause of a miscarriage; however, research has found a number of possible risk factors, including:

  • Age: the chances of miscarriage increase as the woman gets older; women under the age of 25 have a 9% chance of miscarriage, while those aged between 40 and 45 have a 51% chance of miscarriage.
  • Smoking during pregnancy
  • Taking illegal drugs during pregnancy
  • Drinking alcohol during pregnancy
  • Consuming large amounts of caffeine during pregnancy
  • Obesity

Despite many people believing old wives’ tales, there is little evidence to suggest that miscarriage can be caused by emotional problems, stress, lifting, working or exercising. That said, it is advisable to take it easy during the latter stages of the pregnancy and avoid stressful situations.
