Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Specialists

This is a very similar to Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology in that it is concerned with disease, illness and injuries to the teeth, mouth and jaws. This also includes the saliva glands.

The difference between the two is that this specialism is concerned with studying the causes and effects of oral diseases; whereas the other branch is focussed upon using medical imagery to diagnose these complaints.

It’s this study of oral diseases which will help us to gain a better understanding of them and formulate new and improved treatments.

As with any branch of pathology this specialism is focussed upon the causes as well as the progress of a disease. This means looking at potential triggers, the development of the disease and the outcome.

It involves looking at sections of infected oral tissues under a microscope to gain an insight into the disease.

An oral and maxillofacial pathology specialist usually works in a university lab where they will spend a great deal of time on tissue testing and analysis. They will also consult with other oral professionals when deciding upon a diagnosis or course of treatment.

Training for this role is provided by the Royal College of Pathologists. Candidates must undertake a minimum of 5 years training before applying for Membership of the Royal College of Pathologists (MRCPath).
