The Gamete Intra-Fallopian Transfer procedure (men)

The most important aspect of this procedure for men is deciding upon a sperm sample. This can either be from your partner or from a donor source.

You have the choice between a fresh or frozen sample and there are pro’s and con’s of both of these.

Advantages of fresh sperm include:

  • You know who the donor is
  • It personalises what can be a cold, mechanical procedure

Advantages of frozen sperm include:

  • Greater availability of this than fresh sperm
  • It undergoes thorough testing such as HIV screening and genetic analysis.
  • Details of the donor’s profile and physical characteristics, for example, height, weight and age.

This is a highly skilled and delicate procedure which requires a great deal of experience and careful hands!

The male role in this is that of sperm selection. The rest of the procedure involves the woman and includes ovulation stimulation and follicular aspiration.

The GIFT procedure for women is outlined above.
