Q4. What is high blood pressure?

A4. High blood pressure occurs when your heart has to work harder than usual to pump blood around your body. This is due to narrowed arteries which restrict blood flowing through them. This causes the blood flow to push even harder against the artery walls which leads to high blood pressure.

High blood pressure is defined as anything over 120/80, for example 140/90 is classed as high blood pressure.

The medical term for high blood pressure is hypertension.
