Q6. What is an umbilical hernia? : A guide to Hernias

A6. This type of hernia often occurs at birth. It forms in an opening in the abdominal wall, near to the belly button, where the umbilical cord passed through.

This opening usually closes before birth but in some cases it fails to do so which results in a weak spot and the risk of a hernia.
