Q16. What is the difference between being ‘apple shaped’ and ‘pear shaped?’

A16. The terms ‘apple shaped’ and ‘pear shaped’ are used to describe fat distribution on the body. Apple shaped means that you store body fat around your middle and often above your waist. This type of fat storage is more commonly seen in men who often develop a ‘beer belly’ due to an excess of calories. It also means that you carry a high degree of visceral fat which can lead to serious health problems.

Pear shaped people store body fat around their hips, thighs and buttocks. This type of fat storage is seen in women who develop this due to the female hormone oestrogen. They have a lower level of visceral fat.

These are the two main body types although there are variations to this which include the skinny frame, the athletic type etc.
