Q7. Which foods are most likely to cause food poisoning?

A7. Most foods can cause food poisoning but there are some which are most likely to do so. These include:

  • Poultry, e.g. chicken
  • Beef
  • Pork
  • Fish
  • Shellfish
  • Eggs
  • Unpasteurised milk

Certain types of bacteria appear in certain types of food. For example the listeria monocytogenes bacteria are found in soft cheeses such as Brie; pates; ready prepared salads such as pasta salad and coleslaw; cooked sliced meats such as salami and pre-packaged sandwiches.

Even unwashed fruit and vegetables cause food poisoning as they can be covered by infected soil or other debris.
