What are some common foods that can cause an allergic reaction?

There are 8 foods which account for over 90 % of all food allergies in the US. They are:

  • Cow's milk protein allergies
  • Egg protein allergies
  • Wheat protein allergies
  • Peanut allergies
  • Seafood allergies
  • Shellfish allergies
  • Tree nut allergies
  • Soya allergies

These are known as the “big eight.” They are also often among the 10 most common foods to be allergic to in other countries, as well as seeds (such as sesame).

Allergic reactions to fruits and vegetables also exist. Sufferers of oral allergy syndrome, a complication of long-standing severe hay fever, can get oral allergy syndrome. The type of fruit they are allergic to can vary depending on which plant's pollen they are allergic to:

  • Allergies to alder tree pollen can cause reactions against almonds, apples, celery, cherries, peaches, hazelnuts, pears, or parsley.
  • Allergies to birch tree pollen can cause reactions against almonds, apples, apricots, bananas, carrots, celery, cherries, coriander, figs, hazelnuts, kiwifruits, nectarines, pears, peaches, plums, parsley, potatoes, strawberries, or wheat, as well as a few other foods.
  • People suffering from a grass pollen tend to suffer from reactions against with figs, melons, tomatoes, and oranges.
  • Allergies to ragweed pollen can cause reactions against watermelon, honeydew, bananas, and a few other foods too.
  • Allergies to mugwort pollen can cause reactions against carrots, celery, coriander, or peppers, as well as some other foods.

In other countries, other allergies are common. In East Asia, some people have a rice allergy, as rice is a staple food in East Asia. In Central Europe, allergies to celery are common. There is also a small population in Sydney, Australia who are allergic to red meat.
