The gift of clear Vision-All you need to know

Being able to see is one of our crucial senses, and something that we mustn't take for granted. Not everyone has 20/20 vision; there are various reasons why someone may have impaired vision, which require corrective methods, most commonly spectacles or contact lenses. However, not everyone is comfortable with these options. Some may find wearing lenses inconvenient to their lifestyle, or are uncomfortable having to apply them directly to one's eye. Others do not feel confident when wearing glasses, or feel it does not fit in with their personal style.

Fortunately there is another way to easily correct one's vision, and that is through laser eye surgery. This is a modern technique which can completely transform one's life. The procedure is increasingly popular due to its quick and simple process, and the results are extremely successful.

Laser eye surgery can help people with mild to moderate near-sightedness, and/or astigmatism and far-sightedness. Every year thousands of people treat their poor vision with laser eye surgery.

While this is a form of surgery, and should be respected as such, most patients are conscious during the process. Sometimes a patient may require mild sedation, depending on the advice of the surgeon, and each individual case. During the session the surgeon will remodel the patient's corneal tissue using a delicate laser, without the use of heat or cutting. The surgery is virtually pain-free and generally takes less than 15 minutes (many people fit their appointment into a lunch hour). Afterwards the patient will require someone to help them as their sight will still be blurry straight out of surgery, and of course, in some cases they will be mildly sedated.

Recovery can take several days, during which time the patient might experience discomfort or sensitivity as the eyes recover and adjust. During this time it is imperative that recovering patients avoid driving, or strenuous activity. It is often suggested a patient takes two or three days off afterwards, just to ensure they rest appropriately.

As in all medical procedures, there are risks involved; these can include an infection, or a visual haze. In most cases the issues can be treated quite easily, or will resolve themselves in time. It is vital to use an established clinic which specialises in laser eye surgery - such as the Ultralase Laser eye clinic, whose surgeons are certified by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. This way you can ensure you are getting the best treatment, and that you'll come out with the best results. (For example, 99% of patients who get Ultralase Laser Eye Surgery receive 20/20 vision.)

Most of the time, vision is perfect as soon as the surgery is completed, although it can continue improving over a few days. The convenience of laser eye surgery is hard to beat; patients can choose to have both eyes corrected at once, or if it fits better with their schedule, it is possible to do one at a time. This option also offers better value for money, putting an end to the constant costs involved with constantly replacing spectacles or lenses.
