Q21. I think my partner is drinking heavily what can I do? - Drug Addiction FAQs

A21. If you suspect this then he/she needs help but the first step is for him/her to admit that they have a problem. It is difficult to force someone to face up to the fact that they have a problem but this is important if they are to receive treatment.

If someone has admitted that they have an addiction then they are more willing and determined to seek treatment and stick to it than someone who isn’t.

You both need support and someone to talk to so talk to others in your family and seek professional help. Alcoholics Anonymous is a useful group plus there is also your local community alcohol/drugs team.

Their contact details and those of other useful organisations can be found on our links page.

Have a look through the information in this guide, in particular the treating a drug addiction section as this includes alcohol as well as other substances.

Your GP is a good person to talk to about this as is a counsellor specialising in addiction or a local support group. It is important to seek help sooner rather than later as problem drinking may develop into something more serious.
