Am I suitable for Perio Protect?

This is a question many people ask in regard to the perio protect system for treating gum disease. The answer to that can only be decided between you and your dentist. In theory anyone is suitable for perio protect but as with any form of treatment, there are a set of criteria which are used to determine a patient's suitability.

This situation is no different. Your dentist will discuss the treatment with you, outlining the benefits and the preventative measures against gum disease. The gum disease issue is an important one because if left untreated, it can increase the risk of serious conditions such as:

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Kidney disease
  • Lung disease
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Premature birth
  • Type 2 diabetes

But many of these are preventable if you follow a dental hygiene routine which involves brushing and flossing the teeth on a regular basis and visiting your dentist for twice yearly check ups. These conditions can be minimised by perio protect. No-one can say with any certainty that you will not develop any of these diseases but it is possible to lower the risk. One way of doing so is to pay careful attention to your teeth.

Assessing your suitability for perio protect

If you display signs of gum disease such as bleeding red gums, sensitive teeth, gaps between your teeth or bad breath then you may be considered for this treatment.

The decision rests with your dentist. He or she will examine your teeth and ask you about your medical history and current state of health. He/she will look for evidence of gum disease. If your dentist feels that you are unsuitable for this treatment then you will be given a very good reason for this refusal. If this happens then it is likely to be due to a pre-existing medical condition.
