What is Perio Protect?

Perio protect is a pioneering form of treatment which promises a new way of fighting periodontal gum disease. It attacks pockets of bacteria (known as 'biofilms') which reside within the space between the teeth and gum tissue (known as the 'gingival sulcus'). The aim is to control the spread of bacteria and reducing the risk of serious gum disease.

This is a minimal approach to gum disease and which has been used by a great many people. It is quick and painless and forms part of an effective gum management routine.

Two types of gum disease

It is used to treat the two main types of gum disease which include:

  • Gingivitis
  • Periodontitis

There is a third type of gum disease called 'acute necrotising ulcerative gingivitis' (ANUG) which was more commonly known as 'trench mouth' and is a severe version of this disease.

But this is a rare condition which usually affects people with a compromised immune system.

Gingivitis

This is a milder form of gum disease which is characterised by swollen, red gums which bleed when brushed with a toothbrush. This is caused by the build of plaque (bacterial sticky substance) on the teeth.

Periodontitis

This is a serious form of gum disease in which the sufferer has an inflammation in their gums which causes the teeth to become loose and eventually fall out. But perio protect can prevent these from happening. It works best when used in conjunction with a daily dental hygiene routine and regular check ups with your dentist.

It can also be combined with similar forms of treatment as an optional extra.

The perio protect trays

This takes the form of custom designed trays "which look similar to a denture or plastic mouth shield worn by a boxer " that are made of a soft, transparent plastic.

These trays are filled with a special medicinal solution which contains anti-bacterial agents that are designed to fight infections within these pockets. These usually consist of oxidising agents which help to remove any pockets of infection and heal any mouth sores. These trays are placed over your natural teeth and worn once or even several times each day for a set period of time.

The aim is to minimise this build up of bacteria which then minimises the risk of gum disease.

Perio protect as part of a good dental routine

Perio protect is often used before any manual cleaning treatments such as 'scale and polish' (scraping away plaque from the teeth). This is a popular combination and one that boosts the effectiveness of these treatments.

One of the advantages of perio protect is that it is painless. There is no need to undergo surgery or any other procedure which in the past was something of an ordeal.

The main thing to remember is that gum disease, if left unchecked, will only worsen over time. Do not bury your head in the sand over this issue or hope that it will go away by itself over time.

Basically, the sooner you get this treated the better the result for you.

Perio protect is an effective form of treatment but it is important that you speak to your dentist about this and any other concerns you may have about gum disease.
