Newborn and home safety

Just like making sure the clothing your baby wears keeps their temperature constant, making sure the baby’s environment is soothing, comfortable, and cosy is important for their overall wellbeing.

Safety in their home environment should be at the forefront of parent’s minds and should be considered when selecting location for the cot or nappy changing, when choosing or re-using baby products.

The main products that baby’s are exposed to include slings and carriers, changing tables, bath tubs, cots or cribs, gates, playpens, toys, gates, child seats, and other obstacles when trying to move around. Parents need to carefully investigate the safety of a baby product before introducing the product into the home for use.

Anyone handling the newborn, such as a family member, sibling or babysitter, should be informed of safe product use and also obstacles in the baby’s space that may cause harm. They should be provided clear instructions too on care of the baby and who to contact if help is needed.
