What is the role of the umbilical cord?

The umbilical cord provides your baby with nutrients and oxygen which comes from the womb through to the placenta. The placenta is connected to the mother and the baby by the use of the umbilical cord through an opening from the baby’s stomach. Once your baby is born the umbilical cord is normally stumped by a midwife and removed. The procedure is painless to the baby and this is why the cord is cut immediately after birth. The stump will be left on the baby and may need some taking care of.

How long does the umbilical stump last for?

The umbilical stump normally takes around a week to fall out however in some cases the umbilical stump may fall out after 15 days. The stump will begin to turn black and rapidly drop off which will heal after a short period of time.

How should I care for my baby’s umbilical stump?

The umbilical stump has to be well cared for and it is important to try to clean it regularly in order to prevent any infection. Unattended stumps can lead to infections and in the worst cases can lead to severe illnesses. You can follow the helpful tips as outlined below:

• It is important to always wash your hands before touching or cleaning your baby’s stump.
• Giving a bath to your baby is perfectly safe and recommended to heal the stump.
• After your baby has had a bath the stump may fall off and this process usually takes between 7-10 days for the area to heal completely.
• Try to use antibacterial hand wash after dealing with your baby’s stump to prevent infection

What are the signs of umbilical cord infection?

There may be a few signs that your baby has developed an infection and you may be able to identify them. If your baby experiences the following signs you may need to contact your midwife or consult your doctor:

• A fever
• Your baby has trouble feeding
• Your baby becomes very tired
• The navel becomes swollen
• The cord has an off smell
