Q14. How does an autistic adult manage their condition?

A14. A problem for autistic adults is that of a lack of support for them compared to that provided for children. Autism in children is more likely to be diagnosed than in adults which can leave many of these adults struggling to manage their condition.

Many autistic adults are unable to live independently and so remain in the parental home. They may be unable to work or require assistance with some of the most basic skills such as eating or getting dressed or undressed.

What can help is being able to access community care services which will provide advice and support, teach basic skills and even introduce the autistic person to a new hobby or activity.
