Q15. Do autistic people have other medical conditions?

A15. It can be the case that someone with autism often has a medical condition as well.

Very often they will be diagnosed with an autistic spectrum disorder along with another condition such as dyspraxia, dyslexia or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Other conditions include epilepsy, Down’s syndrome and hyperlexia (obsession with data but poor social and communication skills).

Some of these conditions exhibit symptoms which are very similar to autism so it is possible to be given the wrong diagnosis. But the treatment needs to take both conditions into account.

However, it is important that extra attention is given to the problems caused by autism whilst attending to the needs of the other condition.
