Q8. Can you treat a sore throat with antibiotics?

A8. This only applies if your sore throat is caused by a bacterial infection. Antibiotics are effective in this situation but do not work with viral infections such as the common cold or viruses in general.

If your sore throat is caused by other factors apart from bacteria then this can be treated at home or by an over the counter product. Throat sweets, syrups, sprays and cold/flue remedies can help to ease a sore throat.

But in most cases a sore throat will clear up by itself.
