Q23.What effect does your lifestyle have on your throat?

A23. It has a major affect on your throat. If you lead an unhealthy lifestyle as in smoking, drinking too excess and too much junk food plus late nights then this will be reflected in the health of your throat.

Smoking can irritate the throat, causing the tissues to become dry and inflamed. Too much alcohol can do the same. But combining the two is even more risky and increases the chance of throat or mouth cancer.

A poor diet can result in your immune system operating at less than normal which may increases the likelihood of you developing a disease or infection. A sore throat is an indicator of this.

Stress, dust allergies and being overweight are also contributory factors.

This is discussed in more detail in our looking after your throat section.
