Q5. How do the vocal cords work?

A5. The vocal cords are two bands of tissue which stretch across the larynx. These cords vibrate when air passes through them which results in sounds.

The vocal cords open when you inhale, close when you hold your breath and open slightly when you speak or swallow.

The vocal cords are larger and thicker in men: this is why men have a deeper voice than women. But the tone, pitch and quality of a voice will vary between individuals.
