What questions should I ask the teeth whitening dentist?

These can be divided into the two: ‘general’ questions which everyone can ask and those which are relevant to you.

What some patients find helpful is to write a set of questions down beforehand so that they are prepared when they talk to a dentist. It can also be the case that there is likely to be something important which you forget to ask so having a list is a big help.

General questions can include some or all of the following:

  • Are you a member of a professional organisation such as the BACD, GDC or BDA?
  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many teeth whitening procedures have you performed?
  • What are your success rates?
  • Do you specialise in any other procedures?
  • What are the benefits of teeth whitening?
  • How long have you been performing teeth whitening treatments?
  • Will it hurt?
  • What are the complications/side effects?
  • If something goes wrong do I have to pay extra to put it right?
  • How much does teeth whitening cost?
  • Can I pay in instalments?
  • How long does the treatment take?
  • If I am not a suitable candidate then can you recommend an alternative?
  • Will I need an anaesthetic?
  • How long do the results last for? Will I need ‘top ups’?
  • Do you have any ‘before’ and ‘after’ photographs I can look at?
  • Is there any aftercare?
