What are the risks/complications of teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a relatively painless process although some patients find that they do experience some ‘shooting’ pains during or after treatment. If this does happen then they will settle down after a couple of days.

Sensitivity is another aspect: if you are prone to sensitive teeth then you may find that this treatment does cause you to feel some twinges afterwards.

Teeth sensitivity is a common problem for many people who experience twinges or sharp pains after consuming hot or cold drinks.

Another side effect is that of gum irritation. Some patients do find that their gums become irritated from either the whitening gel or bleaching trays. However, this will ease after a few days.

If you do experience any of these then your dentist will give you a special cooling gel to apply to your teeth which will ease this problem.

He or she will also advise you to avoid hot or cold drinks and food for up to 48 hours after your treatment.
