Factors that may have an effect on breastfeeding

How will breastfeeding affect my breasts?

Most women find that their breasts get bigger during pregnancy in preparation for feeding their newborn baby; some women experience no change in size at all and some actually find that their breasts get smaller; it all depends on the individual.

In some cases, women experience sore nipples; if this is the case, you can ask your GP or midwife for advice or use Lansinoh (available at pharmacies) or calendula cream to soothe the pain.

Can I drink alcohol when I’m breastfeeding?

Everything you take into your body may be passed onto your baby during feeding so it is a good idea to keep an eye on how much you drink; a glass of wine now and again will not have much effect but it is now wise to drink regularly or heavily while you are breastfeeding.

Will taking medication affect my baby?

You should discuss this with your GP or midwife prior to taking the medication; some may have no affect at all, while others may not be recommended.

Breastfeeding and returning to work

Some women may want to return to work and continue to breastfeed their babies; this can be possible if you express your breast milk. It is a good idea to have a large supply of breast milk to make life easier once you return to work; you can freeze breast milk but make sure you date it clearly and then defrost it fully before you give it to your baby.

Some women choose to breastfeed their babies at night and give them formula milk and solid food during the day; the body will continue to produce milk while there is a demand so regular night feeds should work fine.
