Pregnancy and tanning with Henna

Henna or lawsonia inermis is a plant with natural dying properties from tannins particularly popular in India for its cooling effects and symbol of fertility. However, natural henna can cause further sensitivity to the skin and allergic reactions. Care should be applied when using henna, such as doing a “test patch” first. Henna is thought to protect the lower skin layers as a sun block when covering the top skin layer.

Although many positive effects of pure henna exist, nowadays henna mixes contain other ingredients that should be taken into consideration. Further research is necessary to determine the impacts of henna on pregnancy.
