What is ENT surgery?

ENT stands for ‘ear, nose and throat’ and is a branch of surgery which deals with problems related to those three areas of the body. This also includes diseases of the head and neck.

The medical term for ENT is Otolaryngology.

What is an ENT surgeon?

This is a highly skilled and experienced surgeon who performs surgery on a vast array of problems connected to ear, nose, throat, head and neck.

What does an ENT surgeon do?

This is one of the most complex areas of surgery which encompasses a wide range of disorders. As a result of this many surgeons choose to specialise in a sub-area, for example otology or head and neck surgery.

ENT sub-areas include:

• Head & neck
• Rhinology (nose)
• Otology (ear)
• Neuro-otology (also related to the ear)
• Facial and reconstructive surgery
• Larynology (throat)
• Paediatrics (ENT disorders in children)

Examples of surgical procedures are:

• Surgical oncology, e.g. oral cancer
• Nasal surgery: to treat chronic sinusitis
• Myringotomy: to treat mastoiditis (ear infection)
• Perforated eardrum
• Facelift and mandible (jaw) fracture
