Rhinology : Specialists

What is rhinology?

Rhinology is the study of the nose and all conditions relating to this plus the sinus and nasal passages.

What is a rhinologist?

This is likely to be an ENT specialist who specifically treats disorders relating to the nose and sinuses. They diagnose and treat a whole range of conditions which are discussed below.

What does a rhinologist do?

They treat a vast array of problems linked to the nose, sinuses and nasal passageways which include:

  • Rhinitis: an inflammation of the soft membrane which lines the nose.
  • Polyps: small swellings – around the size of a grape – which develop inside the nasal passageways and obstruct the sinuses.
  • Sinusitis: an inflammation of the soft membrane inside the sinuses.
  • Rhinosinusitis: a combination of both rhinitis and sinusitis.
  • Deformed nasal septum: the septum is the bridge between the nostrils which if injured, can block one of the nostrils. Surgery is required to straighten this.
  • Weakened nasal tip: the tip of the nose can weaken as a result of age or an injury. This requires surgery to strengthen the tip and so aid with breathing.
  • Snoring: this may be caused by a blocked nose or sleep apnoea caused by excessive weight gain. Treatment for this includes surgery or a special face mask worn at night.
  • Rhinoplasty: a form of cosmetic surgery which is performed to correct a misshapen or over-large nose.
