Abortions through abdominal trauma and miscarriage

Historically, women had limited access to any form of contraception and as a result used to either consider or cause abdominal trauma to abort their unwanted pregnancies. Nowadays, women have access to medications and surgery on the NHS and there is no need for dangerous abortion through abdominal trauma.

Mothers who did use abdominal trauma for forced miscarriage or “back street abortions” in the days without contraception often incurred severe internal injuries as a result of their aborting efforts and did not necessarily have success in miscarriage. In some cultures, women still continue to harm themselves in this way. For this reason, many countries now attach criminal liability to women attempting to use abdominal trauma as a means to abort their baby.
