What are the risks of an extended abdominoplasty?

A6. All surgery carries a small amount of risk. Thousands of abdominoplasty procedures are carried out every year and the vast majority of people are very happy with the results.

However, no surgery is 100% safe. There are complications associated with this surgery which are as follows:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding and haematoma (blood clot)
  • Adverse reaction to anaesthesia
  • Scarring
  • Numbness – in abdomen, thighs and hips
  • Fat or skin necrosis (fat or skin ‘death’)
  • Pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs)
