What are breast implants?

These are the artificial circular or domed shaped prosthetics used to increase the size of a woman’s breasts. The surgery undertaken to do this is known as breast augmentation, breast enlargement, mammoplasty etc.

A series of incisions are made in the breast area and a special pocket is made. The implant is inserted in either of two ways:

• subglandular: the implant is placed above the chest muscle.
• submuscular: the implant is placed beneath the major muscle of the chest.

The implant themselves are rubber shells which are either filled with a saline solution or a silicone gel.
