What questions should I ask my tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) surgeon?

It is a good idea to write down the list of questions you want to ask beforehand. This will prevent you from forgetting an all important question! Tick off each question as you ask it.

A surgeon should be concerned with your welfare and that should take precedence over everything else. If there is anything in your medical history that could cause complications then he or she should let you know about this.

He/she will go through the procedure very thoroughly and be prepared to answer as many questions as you see fit. This means informing you off the complications (these are rare but can happen) as well as the outcome. What you need are sensible expectations regarding the surgery. It will not achieve perfection but you will be happy with the results.

Here is a list of questions which you can take with you:

  • How many of these procedures have you done?
  • How often do you perform this procedure?
  • How many years of training have you had?
  • What qualifications do you have? (BAAPS, BAPRAS etc)
  • Do you have any ‘before’ and ‘after’ photographs I can look at?
  • Do you perform other types of surgery or do you just specialise in this one?
  • What are the benefits and the risks of this procedure?
  • What do I need to do to prepare for this surgery?
  • How painful is this procedure?
  • What type of anaesthetic will I have?
  • What are the success rates of this procedure?
  • Can I speak to any of your former patients?
  • How long will the recovery take?
  • What I can expect from this procedure?
  • What aftercare is there after my surgery?
  • If something goes wrong, who do I contact?
  • How long do the results last?

There are also questions you can ask which are specific to abdominoplasty.

  1. What type of abdominoplasty will I need?
  2. Where are the incisions made?
  3. How much pain can I expect and what will you give me to control it?
  4. Will you reposition my belly button?
  5. Are there other types of surgery which can be performed with abdominoplasty?

You will be given a fixed price quote. This means a price which includes the cost of the surgery itself, your hospital stay, your surgeon’s and anaesthetist’s fees, the follow up visits etc.
