Compensation payout

Anyone who makes a claim for compensation will want to know how much they might receive. If you have sustained an injury as a result of an accident then it is not unreasonable to be curious about the amounts paid out for claims such as yours.

Contrary to what people think, money is not the driving factor in many personal injury claims.

Many people pursue a claim in order to seek justice for their injury. Their lives may have been turned upside down as a result of their illness or injury and may have led to financial hardship amongst other things.

If an injury has caused you to give up work then loss of earnings is just one of many challenges you and your family have to deal with.

A compensation award can be used to cover any costs incurred as a result of your accident and help improve your quality of life.

Compensation payouts vary according to the type of illness or injury.

Here are a few rough estimates:

  • Hearing loss (e.g. in one ear): £17,000 to £20,000 or more
  • Asbestosis: £25,000 to £55,000 or more
  • Post traumatic stress disorder (e.g. moderate): £12,000 to £30,000 or more.
  • Dog bite (e.g. severe facial scarring): £16,000 to £52,000 or more.
  • Whiplash (e.g. road accident): £4,000 or more

These are just a few of the many examples of compensation payouts.

Bear in mind that payouts vary from one case to another. There are a variety of factors involved in each individual case which help determine the final payout.

In general, the more severe the injury is the greater the compensation payout.

Another factor is whether you injury has resulted in you having to stop work –which means a loss of earnings. If it does then compensation may be awarded to cover that loss.

One way of calculating how much compensation is paid for an injury is to use one of many ‘compensation calculators’. These calculators are a feature of many claims management company websites and help you to gain an idea of what you might receive as a payout.

Your solicitor or lawyer will be able to advise you further about compensation awards.
