Q6. Do I have to pay to make a claim for compensation?

A6. If you are making a claim for compensation under the ‘no win no fee’ system then you will not have to pay anything beforehand. You will have an initial meeting with a lawyer or solicitor and this will be free of charge.

If you win your case then the losing party will cover all of your costs which include expenses. However, your solicitor’s fees will be deducted from your compensation award. This is known as a ‘success fee’.

If you lose then you will be liable for yours and the other side’s costs but these can be covered by insurance.

This is discussed further in our taking legal action section.
